Virginia COPS was formed out of a a group of law enforcement officers who met in Richmond early in 1990 that consisted of leaders from the Alexandria Committee of Police; the Arlington Coalition of Police; the Virginia Beach Police Benevolent Association; and other police officers working in Richmond and throughout the Virginia. It was developed to provide a state wide voice for the working needs of police officers, their law enforcement organizations. The Virginia Coalition of Police and Deputy Sheriffs holds at least three training conferences a year around the state and sponsors a scholarship program for high school seniors in Virginia; offers grants to officer street survival schools and other training not normally available through the workplace.
