NEWS RELEASE July 9, 2006 For Immediate Release: Contact Information: Sgt A mber Whittaker (757) 393-5461DEATH OF A PORTSMOUTH DEPUTY SHERIFF Portsmouth – It is with profound regret and deep sadness that the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office announces the untimely death of Deputy Charles A. Fisher. Deputy Charles "Charlie" Fisher, 52 and from Chesapeake, had been hospitalized at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital since July 7, 2006, following a crash on the on-ramp from Portsmouth Blvd. to I 264 East. The apparent single vehicle crash remains under investigation by the Portsmouth Police Department.Deputy Fisher’s official time of death is listed as 2:30 p.m. on July 8, 2006, but had remained on life support until 4:47 this morning as part of his and his family’s dedication to give life to others as an organ donor. Deputy Fisher served with the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office for more than nine years as both an auxiliary and full-time deputy, and has been described by many as a hard worker and extremely dedicated to the community and his family. A news briefing will be held later today at which time we anticipate having more information regarding the upcoming memorial events to honor his life and sacrifice.
