Most police officers in Virginia under the scrutiny of their superiors have a little less to worry about. The House adopted legislation Tuesday prohibitting police agencies from administering lie detector tests to their officers. The measure was sponsored by Del. Terrie L. Suit, R-Virginia Beach, who said several officers approached her about what she deems a questionable practice. Police chierfs have lobbied the legislature to kill the bill, saying it would hamstring efforts to flush out officers who lie. ``They say it would but so does pulling out fingernails, but we don't allow that,'' said Suit, who invoked the case of a former Virginia Beach officer who was fired based on the conclusions of a polygraph test. The officer, Michael P. Hines, was later cleared. The measure(HB1125) is expected to win easy passage in the Senate, which approved a similar measure sponsored by Sen. Kenneth W. Stolle, R-Virginia Beach. |
